Application guide

Stone by application

Start from the job, not the material. Each application asks something different of a surface — heat and knives on a benchtop, sun on an alfresco kitchen, weight on a façade. Here is what matters for each, and which of MAMO's natural, sintered and terrazzo slabs are rated for it.

Applications

What matters, job by job

For each application: the demands it puts on a surface, and how many slabs of each material in MAMO's range are rated for it.

Kitchen benchtops

Heat, knives and daily spills. Sintered stone resists all three and never needs sealing. Granite and quartzite are the harder natural options; marble etches with acids, which a honed finish disguises.

Splashbacks

Continuity with the benchtop, and easy wiping. Carry the benchtop slab up the wall for one continuous run, or bring in a contrasting slab as the feature. Large formats keep joins to a minimum.

Bathrooms

Water and daily use. A non-porous sintered slab earns its place on shower walls and vanity tops; natural stone brings character and is sealed against moisture.

Outdoor

Sun and weather. Sintered stone is UV-stable, so colour holds in direct Australian sun. Among natural stones, honed or tumbled travertine is slip-friendlier and stays comparatively cool underfoot around pools.

Cladding & façades

Weight and coverage. Large-format slabs cover walls with fewer joins, and thinner sintered slabs help where weight is the constraint — inside, and on façades.

Flooring

Traffic, and how a finish feels underfoot. Honed and tumbled finishes are slip-friendlier; sintered stone carries floors indoors and out, and terrazzo suits interior floors, both with continuity into the benchtop.

Feature walls

The pattern. Let one slab's movement run uninterrupted, or book-match consecutive natural slabs from one block into a mirrored feature.

Furniture & tabletops

Heat, wine and handling. Sintered tops take both without a sealing routine; terrazzo and natural stone suit dining and console pieces where the material is the statement.

One surface

One surface, multiple applications

Sintered slabs are routinely rated for several applications at once, so one product can run from benchtop to splashback to floor and out to the alfresco kitchen — one material, read as one space. 59 sintered slabs in the range are rated for 5 or more applications.

Continuity

Benchtop, splashback and floor in the same product read as one considered space rather than three choices.

Inside to outside

UV stability lets the same surface carry on from the kitchen to the alfresco kitchen without fading.

Check each element

Thickness and finish may differ by element — confirm both with your stonemason, and check every product page's rated applications.

Most natural stone conversations start at the kitchen bench, but the range is rated far more widely. Slabs in the natural stone range rated for each application other than benchtops:

Questions

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the brief. Sintered stone resists heat, scratches and stains and never needs sealing. Granite and quartzite are the harder natural stones. Marble is chosen for its look and will etch with acids — a honed finish disguises that. Our team can help you weigh the options for a specific kitchen.

Sintered stone is UV-stable and widely used for alfresco kitchens, outdoor benchtops, pool surrounds and façades. Among natural stones, travertine in a honed or tumbled finish is the most common outdoor choice. Always check the specific slab is rated for outdoor use.

Often, yes. Many sintered products are rated for benchtops, splashbacks, flooring and outdoor use, so one slab can carry through a whole space. Each product page lists the applications that slab is rated for.

No. MAMO supplies and delivers the full slab; your own stonemason or fabricator templates, cuts and installs it. We help you choose the right material, thickness and finish for each application.
