MAMO Studio

Stone Art

One-off works cut, carved and finished by hand from the same slabs we supply to architects — stone treated as a material with something to say.

“We don't ask the stone to become something else. We ask it to show what it has been all along — the pressure, the heat, the slow centuries — and then we get out of the way.”

— MAMO Studio

Stone remembers everything. Our work is deciding what to leave visible.

Stone Art — MAMO Studio

Every slab that reaches our yard carries a record of pressure and time that no process can invent. Stone Art began as a question about what happens when that record is treated as the subject of a piece rather than the surface of one.

The studio works with offcuts and single slabs too characterful for a benchtop — the veins that wander, the breccia that fractures into something unrepeatable. Each work is cut, carved and finished by hand in Sydney, and no two can be made twice.

How a piece is made

Four stages, months apart. The stone sets the pace.

  1. Selection

Works begin at the slab rack, not the drawing board. We look for the block that has already done something interesting — a vein that wanders, a breccia that fractured — and the piece is designed around what is there.

    Selection
  2. Cutting

The slab is sawn wet, in sequence, so the grain can be followed rather than interrupted. Offcuts are kept: several works in the collection exist because of what was left over from another.

  3. Carving

Hand tools from here. Depth is decided against the material as it opens up, which is why a piece can take weeks longer than planned and why none of them can be repeated exactly.

  4. Finishing

Honed, brushed or polished to the depth the stone asks for — often different depths on one piece. Most works are left unsealed so they continue to change.

Commission a piece

Works can be commissioned for a residence, a lobby or a public space — scaled to the wall, cut from a slab chosen with you.
